Refine Your Profile

Chin augmentation is often combined with rhinoplasty (nasal reshaping) to improve the appearance of both nose and chin. In some situations in which significant changes to the chin is needed, the bone can be cut. An implant can be used in cases with straightforward anterior advancement with minimal lengthening.

Consultation

Dr. Colgrove treats each patient as an individual, unique case. He will discuss what specific shape you are trying to achieve and select the procedure needed to enhance your appearance. Chin augmentation is often completed at the same time as other facial surgery, so you can recover from all procedures simultaneously.

Procedure

Dr. Colgrove will shape the implant so that it fits solidly against your existing bone. The procedure usually lasts about one hour. Facial implant surgery is done by local or general anesthesia. It is usually outpatient and the results will be permanent.

Although problems rarely occur, facial implants can shift slightly out of alignment and a second operation may be needed to replace it in its proper position. Infection can occur with any operation. If infection were to occur around a facial implant and did not clear up after treatment with antibiotics, the implant might have to be temporarily removed and replaced at a later time. Other, less-frequent risks may be associated with certain implants. Be sure to ask for a description of the risks associated with the procedure in which you are interested.

Some of the implant materials are made of a solid silicone. Currently, there is no scientific evidence that this is a harmful substance.

Dr. Colgrove will be happy to discuss any current scientific findings concerning the type of implant you’re considering.

You will experience some discomfort and swelling in the affected area for several days, but chin augmentation involves very little bruising or swelling. It’s normal to experience some temporary difficulty with smiling and talking. Black and blue marks may be visible around the chin and neck.

You likely will need to take only two or three days off of work, and will be feeling back to normal within a week. It may take up to six weeks until your implant site is completely healed and final results are visible. Patients should avoid strenuous physical activity for about a month after their procedure. As with any implant, patients will want to avoid trauma to the chin implant area, as this may damage the implants.
