Dermaplaning
Blading, microplanning, or dermaplaning involves skimming dead skin cells and hair from the face. Your plastic surgeon will make use of an exfoliating blade for this nonsurgical procedure. The treatment allows for a smoother and youthful looking skin. The treatment can also remove uneven pockmarks and acne-related deep scarring. This procedure is generally recommended by plastic surgeons for patients that are troubled by ‘peach fuzz’ which is characterized by short and soft hair on the face. Vinings Surgery Center, led by board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Colgrove, provides dermaplaning for skin exfoliation, facial cleansing and “peach fuzz” reduction to patients in Atlanta, Marietta, Georgia, and surrounding communities.
Dermaplaning Candidates
Dermaplaning is a non-surgical procedure, which is safe for all skin types. Unlike other plastic surgery procedures, this noninvasive procedure doesn’t involve general anesthesia. It can be easily performed as an in-office procedure. These are a few characteristics in ideal candidates:
- Acne scars
- Peach fuzz
- Fine wrinkles
- Sun damaged skin
- Dry skin
- Dull skin
Dermaplaning Mechanism
Dermaplaning involves the use of an exfoliating blade that looks like a regular sharp razor for body hair removal. It follows the same concept as using a razor on the legs. A sterile blade is dragged on the skin at a 45-degree angle. The blade is slowly dragged for removing dead cells, scar tissues, and other debris. Daily environmental toxins and sun damage can cause the skin to become uneven. The topmost skin layer may appear dull making you look older. Dermaplaning is a novel way to get newer and youthful looking skin without undergoing plastic surgery.
Dermaplaning Procedure
You should only feel a mild tingling sensation during the treatment. Your treatment provider will perform the procedure in a clean room. Local anesthesia or a numbing agent may be used for minimizing discomfort. An electronic or manual dermaplaning tool may be used by the provider for scraping the skin once you are relaxed. Exfoliation will be completed in 20 – 30 minutes depending on the targeted area. Soothing substance, such as aloe may be used by the provider for calming the skin.
Recovery and Results of Dermaplaning
The procedure doesn’t involve any downtime. You may feel a tingling sensation. The skin may become red because of constant scraping, which should heal on its own in a day or two. Results of dermaplaning are usually seen instantly. However, you should still give it a few days to see full results. Dermaplaning is a nonsurgical treatment and doesn’t provide permanent results. However, the results last for a fairly long time. It is important that patients always wear sunscreen when they step out.
Need for Repeat Treatments
Dermaplaning can be performed without any side effects every 3 – 4 weeks. The procedure will not be able to stop aging, get rid of acne scars, all eliminate peach fuzz permanently. You should schedule an appointment with your surgeon if you are concerned about skin imperfections. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Robert Colgrove receives patients from Atlanta, Marietta, Georgia, and nearby areas for dermaplaning for skin exfoliation, facial cleansing and “peach fuzz” reduction.
