African American Hair Restoration Transplants
Many African American men and women are concerned whether hair transplant can successfully work for them. The good news is that the advanced SmartGraft follicular unit extraction (FUE) technology is as effective on ethnic hair as any other. Unlike the traditional strip technique, SmartGraft does not create a visible linear scar, and produces optimal hair restoration results for black hair. Vinings Surgery Center, led by board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Colgrove, provides African American hair restoration with SmartGraft to patients in Atlanta, Marietta, Georgia, and surrounding locations.

How does SmartGraft Work on Black Hair?
SmartGraft FUE hair transplant is best suited for ethnic or African American hair. Due to genetic reasons, the hair follicles of people of African ethnic descent typically have more curly and wavy hair. These follicles produce the curly hair fibers. With traditional techniques, it can be difficult to harvest these hairs from the donor sites and transplant them successfully in the affected areas of the scalp. SmartGraft utilizes advanced instrumentation and special FUE techniques to harvest the curvy hair follicle grafts individually for maximum effect. The procedure is less intrusive and leaves no linear scarring. In African American patients, the hair follicles in the back and sides of the scalp (the donor sites) are usually more permanent than the sites at the temples, hairline, mid-scalp, frontal, or crown areas. When the SmartGraft procedure is performed by an experienced surgeon, maximum donor grafts will be preserved and utilized for thicker, denser results. The donor follicles will be transplanted skillfully in the recipient areas so that they can live, grow, and thrive in the new site permanently.
African American Hair Density
Black men and women usually have about 55,000 to 65,000 hair follicles available in the donor sites (unlike Caucasians who may have up to 100,000 follicles, or Asians who have about 85,000). This means that the total number of hair follicles that can be removed without over-harvesting the donor site is relatively less. However, with the expertise of the hair transplant surgeon and the cutting-edge SmartGraft technology, it is possible to do more with less. One of the favorable properties of ethnic hair and African American hair, in particular, is that the hair will take up more space. This means that more of the recipient area can be covered with fewer grafts. These are the nuances of black hair, which an experienced SmartGraft hair transplant surgeon would leverage to achieve excellent hair restoration results. The SmartGraft process is automated and involves minimal manual interaction for maximum benefit. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Robert Colgrove receives patients from Atlanta, Marietta, Georgia, and nearby areas for SmartGraft African American hair restoration.
