Types of Implants Used for Breast Augmentations

Saline implants are filled with saline, typically at the time of surgery. They tend to feel firmer than silicone implants. Silicone implants are prefilled with silicone gel, a thick, sticky fluid that mimics the feel of natural tissue.

The “gummy bear implant” is made of a highly cohesive silicone gel that maintains the implant’s teardrop shape. Much like the silhouette of a natural breast, these slope gently to a full projection point in the lower portion of the implant. The teardrop shape of the implant means it’s thinner at the top and blends gradually into the upper chest.

Depending on your consultation with Dr. Colgrove and previous history, one type of implant may be more beneficial than the others. In most cases, the choice of saline versus silicone results in little, if any, discernible difference in the appearance of augmented breasts. However, saline implants increase the chance of visible rippling or wrinkling.

Dr. Colgrove can reduce the chances of this occurring by inserting the implants under your pectoral muscle. This is why it’s important for him to assess the stiffness or looseness of your muscles before he recommends the best type for your breast augmentation. The Breast Augmentation Procedure

Your breast augmentation surgery (or “augmentation mammaplasty”) is performed under general anesthesia at Vinings Surgery Center in Atlanta. The surgery can take up to 2 hours, depending on the type of procedure and whether other surgeries are being performed at the same time.
