Breast Implants vs Fat Transfer

Breast Implants vs Fat Transfer | Atlanta Plastic Surgery | RoswellAlthough breast augmentation is the most common procedure for those wishing to enhance the appearance of the breasts, more individuals are beginning to seek alternative procedures that do not involve the use of artificial implants. In recent years, fat transfer has become popular for those wanting to increase the size of their breasts. While both procedures can offer desirable results, there are some differences to consider when choosing which to undergo. During your consultation, your surgeon will explain the pros and cons between the procedures and help you make an informed decision that is best for your goals. Vinings Surgery Center, led by reliable board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Colgrove, provides breast augmentation to patients in Atlanta, Marietta, Georgia, and surrounding locations.

Breast Implants

Breast implants come in either saline or silicone and are available in a variety of shapes and sizes. In addition to increasing size, implants can also be used to reconstruct the breasts after mastectomies or to correct asymmetries. During breast augmentation, your surgeon will make incisions in concealed areas around the breasts and insert the implants, either above or below the muscle. Results from this procedure are visible immediately.

Fat Transfer

During fat transfer, excess fat is harvested from a donor area of the body, such as the hips, thighs or abdomen. The fat is then purified and inserted into the breasts, creating soft, natural-looking results. The benefit of this procedure is that the size of the breasts are increased while contouring the body where the excess fat is harvested from.

Which Procedure is Better?

Fat transfer is a safer procedure as it doesn’t involve placing an artificial implant into the body. With breast implants, there is always a risk of implant rupture, rippling, or capsular contracture. Although complications are uncommon, fat transfer does not have these risks. The biggest deciding factor between these two procedures is the desired size increase. Fat transfer is only ideal for patients looking to increase their breast size by up to half a cup size, while breast implants can increase breast size considerably. For longevity of results, it is important to note that fat from fat transfer may be absorbed by the body following the procedure. This treatment may need to be repeated for patients that wish to continue seeing results. Breast implants are meant to be durable and will last for several years, but will need to be removed or replaced eventually.
