Reduction mammaplasty is performed for reshaping the breasts to reduce its overall size. Breast reduction procedure may be performed for cosmetic reasons or functional purposes. It is recommended if the breasts are causing back problems, discomfort, chronic pain, sleeping problems, and other health concerns. Your plastic surgeon will recommend the most appropriate surgical technique based on your general health, medical history, age, and personal preferences. Vinings Surgery Center, led by board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Colgrove, provides breast reduction surgery to patients in Atlanta, Marietta, Georgia, and surrounding locations.
Preoperative Testing
Your treatment provider may ask you to undergo a breast exam, chest x-ray, mammogram, and blood tests. They would require a mammogram performed within the last 6 months of the surgery. Another exam might be required following the procedure when the incision area has healed.
Lose Excessive Weight and Stop Smoking
You should lose weight and give up smoking for a few weeks before and after the plastic surgery to give your body the chance to heal well. Smoking increases the risk of surgery-related complications. It slows down the healing process. You can improve the likelihood of healing by stopping smoking ever for a few days. Eating a healthy diet is important for successful results and recovery as well.
Get Medical Leave
Your surgeon will explain the recovery process and expected downtime. You should take the appropriate amount of leave from work, which is usually 3 to 4 weeks. Depending on the type of work you do, you may be able to return after 2 weeks. Don’t leave this until the last minute because you need to give your body enough time to heal adequately.
Arrange for Help in the First Few Days
You would be under the effects of anesthesia and would require someone to drive you home following the breast reduction cosmetic surgery procedure. You should arrange for a friend or family member to stay with you the first night or the first few days. They can help with your daily chores at home, and may also accompany you to the first post-operative appointment after 3 days if your surgeon wants to review your condition. Alternatively, you may want to arrange for professional help who can support you with household chores and take care of your children or pets for about one week following the procedure.
Stop Certain Medications
Your doctor will ask for a list of all medications and supplements you take. They will recommend you to stop taking certain medications, such as aspirin or NSAIDs. You would be asked to refrain from taking ginseng, vitamin E, fish oil, ginkgo biloba, and other blood thinners as well. These supplements increase the risk of bleeding during surgery. You should confirm from your surgeon before resuming the medications.
Prepare the Recovery Area
Preparing the space where you will recover and rest is important. You should plan ahead and keep your favorite books, snacks, and entertainment options handy. You should also get comfortable clothes ready beforehand. This includes button down shirts that are easy to wear and remove. Make sure you have clean washcloths and gauze on hand. Accomplished cosmetic surgeon Dr. Robert Colgrove receives patients from Atlanta, Marietta, Georgia, and nearby area for breast reduction surgery.
