A Restoring Reversal

For some, the reason for a decision to have cosmetic surgery is driven by the need to repair a past procedure. One example of this type of surgery is breast implant removal, which can become necessary due to faulty implant materials, a poorly executed procedure, or the changing preferences of the patient.

You may have heard or read about the unfortunate Poly Implant Prothèses (PIP) implant scare. These implants, made in France and used by 300,000 women around the world, have been found to be faulty and prone to bursting. Dr. Robert Colgrove is well prepared and qualified to assist women who are concerned about their PIP implants, as well as any other breast implant removal issue.

If you decide to have your implants removed, Dr. Colgrove will work with you to decide the best course of action for you. If your implants are ruptured, or if you have capsular contracture or capsular calcifications, you may also need to have the implant capsule removed through a surgery called capsulectomy.

Most breast implant removal surgeries take an hour or two under general anesthesia. However, most patients also need internal breastwork done. Dr. Colgrove uses an innovative technique to put the breast tissue back where it belongs. This is critical to having a full, high breast after implant removal.

Finally, depending on the amount of loose skin you have after the removal, you may also need a breast lift. The scar from mastopexy varies from patient to patient, depending on the degree of excess skin. Scarring will be kept to a minimum.

Recently, a patient of Dr. Colgrove shared her experience with breast implant removal at Vinings Surgery Center:

“In 2005 I had my first breast augmentation in my country, they got encapsulated, they hurt so much and they were very hard…no normal look. On 2009 I went back to my country to visit another doctor who advised me to do an ultrasound because I had PIP brand, they found out that the silicone immigrate and it was under my armpit (axilla). I was terrified because that brand was using an industrial silicone so it was urgent for me to replace them but I could not do it there. I wait because I did not have the money but my health was in dangerous. So after 2 years I decided to visit Dr. Robert Colgrove who explained procedure in detail and helped me to understand all the process; the nurses did a completion of the documents and provide all the information necessary what to do before and after surgery; they were so nice and compassionate; I was very nervous and terrified for what was going to happen. Almost 2 years since the surgery I feel great and my breasts look natural and perfect.”

As you consider the possibility of having breast augmentation, it can help to be able to visualize what the results will look like in a real way before you make your decision. Taking the time to create this picture of what your results will look like also will help you set realistic, healthy expectations for the surgery.

Here are a few ways you can create the look and feel of the breast implants you are thinking about to help guide you in your process.

  • Purchase a bra that you want to fill upon completion of the surgery and take it to the Dr. Colgrove’s office during your consultation to experiment with different sizes of implants with different types of clothing such as swimsuit, T-shirt, dress, etc. By physically trying on the implants you will get a good idea of what to expect. Just remember to add about 10% to the final volume to account for the flattening that occurs under the muscle.
  • Use the rice test at home to experiment with sizing. Fill a plastic zipper bag with rice and place beneath your bra to see how it looks. Again try with different clothing. This also allows you to understand how that extra weight feels on you chest and shoulders. One ounce of rice equals 30cc or 250cc equals one cup.
  • Keep in mind that the amount of cleavage you have will vary depending on the tightness of the skin on the breastbone (sternum), curvature of the ribs, and how active you are after surgery. For example, if you are doing activities that require significant arm motion to the sides, this will probably shift the implants more to the side. *Aftercare tip: Keeping pads or tape along the sides of the breasts or keeping the arms down as much as possible after surgery seems to help maintain better cleavage.*

The important thing to remember is you will be bigger and your bodily proportions will be different than they are now. Breast augmentation is the most popular plastic surgery procedure performed, and the vast majority of the patients are delighted with their final results. Just remember that careful and thoughtful planning can make all the difference in how you feel about your personal results post-surgery.

Even if you made it your New Year’s resolution to get more fit and toned in 2014, there are some frustrating areas that just don’t respond to a healthy diet and exercise. One of those stubborn fatty areas is the arms–but there is help!

Arm lift surgery (brachioplasty) is a procedure that tightens loose or sagging skin around the upper arms, sometimes not-so-affectionately called “bat wings”. Arm liposuction is often conducted at the same time as the arm lift.

At Vinings Surgery Center, Dr. Robert Colgrove uses some of the most advanced liposuction techniques to remove localized fatty tissue deposits and create beautiful body contours. He customizes each treatment according to the unique needs of each patient, an approach that allows him to consistently deliver remarkable liposuction results. Because each patient’s situation is different, only a personal consultation with Dr. Colgrove can help you determine which liposuction method is the best for you.

Liposuction precisely breaks apart and emulsifies fat deposits for easy, safe removal. The result is a more beautifully sculpted appearance with less time off for recovery. The length of the surgery is generally 2 to 3 hours, depending on the extent of the surgery, and is typically performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. Recovery time is 1 to 2 weeks. Strenuous actives can be performed within 2 to 4 weeks after procedure. The results of this procedure are permanent when accompanied by an appropriate diet and exercise.

Here are some happy words from a recent patient of Dr. Colgrove’s who had an arm lift:

“Dr. Robert Colgrove did a arm lift and took off excess skin from my elbows. Both turned out better than I expected. Downtime wasn’t painful. Only took two weeks off work.
I would definitely recommend this procedure. My arms look 20 years younger than before. The scars are looking better everyday and should not be noticeable by summer when I get in to my tank tops.”

Dr. Colgrove and the staff at Vinings Surgery Center have an innovative new technology to offer patients who want to reduce wrinkles, tighten loose skin and contour problem areas of the body: ThermiRFTM.

ThermiRFTM uses radiofrequency (RF) technology, which for more than 75 years has been safely used in cardiology, pain management, dermatology, plastic surgery and other medical specialities. This technology allows physicians to precisely locate an area for treatment, then apply a specific dose of controlled radiofrequency energy to a portion of the targeted area for wrinkle reduction, body contouring, lifting, relaxation of frown lines and skin tightening.

ThermiRFTM is the first aesthetic therapy that uses temperature control technology, which is a safer than laser and other RF technology currently being used. All procedures done with ThermiRFTM can be performed in the office setting and do not require any down time. Patients can have procedures done  during a lunch hour and return to work.

ThermiRFTM can be used to tighten small areas of adipose tissue (fat) deposits in areas including:

  • Frown reduction
  • Submental
  • Axillary fold
  • Arms (tricept area)
  • Abdomen (love handles)
  • Knees

The ThermiRFTM device is FDA-cleared and provides a minimally-invasive solution for tightening and fat reduction anywhere on the body. A tiny radio-frequency probe delivers the prescribed dose of safe RF energy through the non-insulated tip of the probe to heat the targeted loose tissue and fat cells. This is a very accurate method to selectively target the loose tissue and fat pockets results in controlled tissue reduction and tightening. Over time, the treated fat cells are drained via the lymphatic system and then excreted as urine and the lax tissues tighten.

The prescribed temperature is set by the clinician to ensure a comfortable yet effective treatment for each patient. The ThermiRFTM Platform controls the temperature of the handpiece tip that is in contact with the patient. The clinician can set the desired temperature and know that it is being delivered to the patient. Once the handpiece tip reaches the target temperature, a digital clock measures time. With precise temperature and time, the clinician can target and control the therapeutic dose. The system increases safety and delivers more reliable clinical outcomes.

Here’s just one of the many great reviews for Dr. Colgrove posted recently on Kudzu.com —

“I went to Dr. Colgrove for my 2nd breast augmentation and was beyond impressed. After seeing results from a different place I could truly see how good it was! I had no bruising, and very little pain! They looked and felt so GREAT! The price was also very much cheaper, but the office was much more inviting, staff was much more friendly and the procedure itself was much better. I tell everyone I know to go to him he is so amazing! I am so glad I went to him, because after not being happy with the first procedure (not with him of course) I was afraid to even try again, but now I couldn’t be happier with the way my breasts turned out! Thank you so much Dr. Colgrove and team!”

Your waist is as wide as or wider than your hips

Whether you call it a beer belly, love handles, or a spare tire, carrying fat around the middle of your body is not a good thing. In fact, one study found that people who are average weight but have excess belly fat may be at higher risk of dying from heart disease than those who are officially obese. The culprit is the layer of fat, called the omentum, that’s inside the belly and is located dangerously close to important organs. Also called visceral or intra-abdominal fat, omental fat can travel quickly to your liver or through the bloodstream to lodge along the artery walls.

Abdominal fat is a tip-off to metabolic syndrome and has been linked with heart disease, artery disease, and diabetes. Doctors define metabolic syndrome as having three out of these four signs: obesity, with fat concentrated around your waist; high blood pressure; high cholesterol; and high blood sugar. For an official diagnosis of metabolic syndrome, doctors define obesity as having a waist circumference of 40 inches or more for men and 35 inches or more for women, although waist circumference cutoff points can vary by race. Once you have metabolic syndrome, you’re likely to become prediabetic or insulin resistant, which is why your doctor will order regular diabetes testing and suggest lifestyle changes to reduce your risk.

Surprising clue: Your belt won’t stay up, or it makes your pants ride high over your belly or low under an overhanging gut. When your waist is larger than what’s above and below it, things tend to slip.

Honey

Honey as a facial treatment may help skin retain moisture. It also heals dry or chapped skin and can give you firmer, smoother skin.

How to make it: Warm a small pot of honey in a double boiler over low heat. After testing a small dab on the inside of your elbow for a safe temperature, apply the honey generously over your entire face. Leave the mask on for 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm, then cool water.

ANTI-AGING FOODS: Fish
A popular dietary supplement in recent years has been fish oil, and there’s certainly good reason for that trend. Eating fish, or taking fish oil supplements, provides the body with omega-3 fatty acids that help protect against heart disease, reduce inflammation, decrease the risk of arrhythmia and lower blood pressure. Omega-3 fatty acids are found largely in coldwater fish, including salmon, herring, tuna and sardines.

fish

Studies have even shown that people who eat a lot of fish live longer. One study of middle-aged American men found that those who ate fish two to three times per week had a 40 percent lower mortality rate than those who did not. In men who had previously suffered a heart attack, eating fish twice a week actually lowered their mortality rates by 29 percent.

Fish is also a great source of protein and, unlike other meats, is low in saturated fat. The American Heart Association recommends eating omega-3-rich fish at least two times per week.

 Super Foods: Beans

Because beans have so many health benefits, they’re sometimes called a “super food” — an informal term for foods that benefit the body in many different ways. Super foods help you meet several of your dietary needs and are great sources of essential vitamins and minerals. Many also help fight disease and sickness, making them powerful anti-aging tools. Other super foods you might want to get your hands on include blueberries, yogurt, eggs, nuts, broccoli and sweet potatoes.

MORE ON ANTI-AGING:

Beans, beans, they’re good for your heart, the more you eat the more you, well, you get the idea. Beans often get a bad reputation because they can make you gassy, but they’re truly one of the great dietary staples. They’re an excellent source of low-fat protein, especially for those who don’t eat meat. They also contain fiber (which can help lower cholesterol), are rich in antioxidants, and are chock full of all sorts of vitamins and minerals, including iron, vitamin B and potassium.

What’s more, some beans — including soy and kidney beans — contain protease inhibitors and genistein, which are thought to help protect against cancer. Studies have shown, for instance, that people who had high levels of genistein had the lowest rates of breast and prostate cancers .
