Arm Yourself for the New Year

Tag Archives: Liposuction

Even if you made it your New Year’s resolution to get more fit and toned in 2014, there are some frustrating areas that just don’t respond to a healthy diet and exercise. One of those stubborn fatty areas is the arms–but there is help!

Arm lift surgery (brachioplasty) is a procedure that tightens loose or sagging skin around the upper arms, sometimes not-so-affectionately called “bat wings”. Arm liposuction is often conducted at the same time as the arm lift.

At Vinings Surgery Center, Dr. Robert Colgrove uses some of the most advanced liposuction techniques to remove localized fatty tissue deposits and create beautiful body contours. He customizes each treatment according to the unique needs of each patient, an approach that allows him to consistently deliver remarkable liposuction results. Because each patient’s situation is different, only a personal consultation with Dr. Colgrove can help you determine which liposuction method is the best for you.

Liposuction precisely breaks apart and emulsifies fat deposits for easy, safe removal. The result is a more beautifully sculpted appearance with less time off for recovery. The length of the surgery is generally 2 to 3 hours, depending on the extent of the surgery, and is typically performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. Recovery time is 1 to 2 weeks. Strenuous actives can be performed within 2 to 4 weeks after procedure. The results of this procedure are permanent when accompanied by an appropriate diet and exercise.

Here are some happy words from a recent patient of Dr. Colgrove’s who had an arm lift:

“Dr. Robert Colgrove did a arm lift and took off excess skin from my elbows. Both turned out better than I expected. Downtime wasn’t painful. Only took two weeks off work.
I would definitely recommend this procedure. My arms look 20 years younger than before. The scars are looking better everyday and should not be noticeable by summer when I get in to my tank tops.”

Did you know Dr. Colgrove is one of only a few surgeons in Atlanta to offer water-assisted liposuction (WAL)? He has made this less traumatic and less risky lipoplasty technique available at Vinings Surgery Center for more than a year. Developed in 2000 and FDA approved as a safe procedure, water-assisted liposuction is regarded as a minimally invasive fat removal procedure.

Throughout the years, several other techniques have been developed in order to perfect the art of liposuction, which includes using a high-powered vacuum to suck fat out or lasers or chemical injections that melt or break down fat cells prior to suctioning. However, it is the simple act of using water that is said to be the key to making liposuction a more comfortable, easier, and quicker procedure for the patient. Also called Body Jet liposuction, water-assisted liposuction is designed to dislodge the fat before gently washing it out of the body with a special cannula. The cannula used for this particular lipoplasty procedure has openings on both the sides and the top for two distinct purposes. The opening at the top releases high-pressured water that helps break down the fat while leaving the surrounding nerves and blood vessels unharmed. A mixture of fat and fluid is then suctioned from the holes on the side of the cannula.

Although every liposuction technique that has been developed thus far has the intention of reducing all potential risks for post-operative complications, as well as problems during surgery, patients may still experience infection, bleeding, and nerve damage with some of these other methods. Just as traditional liposuction typically involves general anesthesia, this revolutionary technique is usually performed in the same manner; however, based on the area treated, a local anesthetic may be used instead. There are a number of other advantages to this as a low-impact procedure, including: less surgical time, less costly (due to there being less time in surgery), no downtime, a shorter recovery period, and a possible improvement in the appearance of cellulite.

Ever wonder what the most common cosmetic procedures are?

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, during 2010 in the United States, the five most frequently performed invasive cosmetic surgery procedure were breast augmentation, then nose reshaping, then eyelid surgery, liposuction and tummy tuck. The top five minimally invasive procedures nationwide last year were Botulinum Toxin Type A (BOTOX®), followed by soft tissue fillers, then chemical peel, laser hair removal and microdermabrasion.

Before and After
Among the many innovative techniques and procedures offered at Vinings Surgery Center is Body-Jet® Water-Assisted Liposuction. This type of liposuction uses fine streams of water with precise instrumentation to remove unwanted fatty deposits on the face and body. The pressure-washing effect of the water removes the fat with less trauma and bleeding. This translates into a quicker recovery with less bleeding and bruising for the patient. Limited areas can be treated under a local anesthetic which reduces the cost and the risk of general anesthesia. The ideal patient should be in good health with minimal sagging of skin and within 25 pounds of their ideal weight goal. Once the fat is removed in the treated area, it will not return. According to a study featured in Outpatient Surgery Magazine, liposuction may have more than a cosmetic impact—it could have health benefits, as well. The study links the procedure to reduced triglycerides and white blood cell counts, both of which could be indicators of improved health. “New research suggests that liposuction may have benefits that are much more than cosmetic. A study being presented at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ annual conference in Denver, Colo., this weekend finds that liposuction patients experience a reduction in triglyceride levels and white blood cell counts, which could potentially decrease patients’ risks for heart disease, stroke and diabetes.” Read the full article here.

When considering any cosmetic surgery procedure, it’s practical and very wise to give thought to how much recovery time you’ll need. It will be tremendously helpful to know what to expect in the hours, days and weeks after your procedure. You also can help prepare those around you, including the people you work with, by letting them know ahead of time what to expect and helping them plan for it as needed. As far as immediate recovery from anesthesia is concerned, times can vary from patient to patient, but most people recover from anesthesia within just a few hours. You may feel groggy or nauseated at first, but most patients are well recovered, awake and able to read a book by the evening of their procedure. During the first couple of postoperative days, it is likely that you will need a bit of assistance, depending on your procedure.

Here are some guidelines for popular procedures, to give you an idea of what you may need.

  • Liposuction: Patients are typically able to get around unassisted by the second day (earlier if smaller areas are liposuctioned). Most patients are able to go back to work in four to six days after the procedure.
  • Breast Surgery: Although the patient may not be able to raise arms above the head, the patient can usually do most things unassisted by the second day. The patient can usually return to a desk job five to seven days after the procedure. Two weeks may be required for jobs that require exertion, such as food server or flight attendant.
  • Facelift: The patient can get around alone on the second day. It may be ten days to two weeks before the patient feels comfortable being seen in public again.
  • Eyelid Surgery: The patient can get around unassisted on the second day. The patient may want to wear sunglasses and surgical makeup when going out in public after the third day. He or she can go back to work about the sixth postoperative day.
  • Tummy Tuck: It may require up to four days before the patient can get around alone. Patients who have a desk job may return in ten days. More strenuous jobs like a food server or letter carrier may require at least three weeks.
