Visualize Your Results

Tag Archives: Plastic Surgery

As you consider the possibility of having breast augmentation, it can help to be able to visualize what the results will look like in a real way before you make your decision. Taking the time to create this picture of what your results will look like also will help you set realistic, healthy expectations for the surgery.

Here are a few ways you can create the look and feel of the breast implants you are thinking about to help guide you in your process.

  • Purchase a bra that you want to fill upon completion of the surgery and take it to the Dr. Colgrove’s office during your consultation to experiment with different sizes of implants with different types of clothing such as swimsuit, T-shirt, dress, etc. By physically trying on the implants you will get a good idea of what to expect. Just remember to add about 10% to the final volume to account for the flattening that occurs under the muscle.
  • Use the rice test at home to experiment with sizing. Fill a plastic zipper bag with rice and place beneath your bra to see how it looks. Again try with different clothing. This also allows you to understand how that extra weight feels on you chest and shoulders. One ounce of rice equals 30cc or 250cc equals one cup.
  • Keep in mind that the amount of cleavage you have will vary depending on the tightness of the skin on the breastbone (sternum), curvature of the ribs, and how active you are after surgery. For example, if you are doing activities that require significant arm motion to the sides, this will probably shift the implants more to the side. *Aftercare tip: Keeping pads or tape along the sides of the breasts or keeping the arms down as much as possible after surgery seems to help maintain better cleavage.*

The important thing to remember is you will be bigger and your bodily proportions will be different than they are now. Breast augmentation is the most popular plastic surgery procedure performed, and the vast majority of the patients are delighted with their final results. Just remember that careful and thoughtful planning can make all the difference in how you feel about your personal results post-surgery.

It’s a brand new year! Are you thinking of making a change in 2014? If you’re considering having any kind of cosmetic procedure, it’s a good idea to take some time to reflect on your motivations, hopes and expectations for the process and results.

Here are a few questions it’s important to ask yourself as you decide whether a procedure is right for you.

  • What are the main reasons I want to have this procedure?
  • Does the area or issue I want to address keep me from going out in public?
  • Does it keep me from having relationships or friendships with people?
  • How much will money influence my selection of surgeon and procedure?
  • Have I talked to others who have had a similar procedure, and what were their experiences like?
  • How much of my day do I spend thinking about having the procedure?
  • How do I feel about the cosmetic surgeon I have selected? Do I feel ease and trust in the relationship? Is this choice the best fit for me?
  • Do I have any questions remaining about the procedure?
  • Will I be able and willing to take the time needed for recovery and proper care after the procedure?
  • How do I envision my body and my life being different after the procedure?

Cosmetic procedures can certainly complement other positive life changes, but they should not be looked to as a way to completely change your life. It’s vital to make your goals for the procedure realistic and part of an otherwise healthy, balanced life.

As you are considering all your options, feel free to give us a call with any questions at  770-955-9000.

Here’s just one of the many great reviews for Dr. Colgrove posted recently on Kudzu.com —

“I went to Dr. Colgrove for my 2nd breast augmentation and was beyond impressed. After seeing results from a different place I could truly see how good it was! I had no bruising, and very little pain! They looked and felt so GREAT! The price was also very much cheaper, but the office was much more inviting, staff was much more friendly and the procedure itself was much better. I tell everyone I know to go to him he is so amazing! I am so glad I went to him, because after not being happy with the first procedure (not with him of course) I was afraid to even try again, but now I couldn’t be happier with the way my breasts turned out! Thank you so much Dr. Colgrove and team!”

With so many choices in breast implants these days, how do you know whether the “gummy bear implant”, Mentor® MemoryShape Breast Implant, is the right option for you?

As with all breast implant choices, you and Dr. Colgrove will take into consideration your unique features, as well as your desired outcomes in order to give you the beautiful result you’re looking for. Here are some of the factors that may guide your decision:

Do you have a certain look in mind?

If teardrop-shaped implants are made to match the silhouette of a natural breast with more fullness at the bottom than at the top is the look you want, MemoryShape Breast Implants may be right for you. If you want a look that is more “round” at the top of your breast, discuss the option of MemoryGel® Round Breast Implants with your surgeon.

Is the feel of the breast implant most important to you?

MemoryShape Implants are filled with a highly cohesive silicone gel that helps the implant create a natural breast silhouette. Although this gel is pliant, it may feel firmer to you than your natural breast tissue, depending on your amount of tissue coverage. If the feel of your implant is a top priority, ask your surgeon about MemoryGel®Breast Implants. They are a round breast implant option that may have a slightly softer feel.

Do you have sufficient tissue coverage?

An important consideration in determining if MemoryShape Implants may be a good choice for you is the amount of breast tissue coverage you have. During your consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your breast tissue to determine if MemoryShape Implants are well suited to you.

Do you have an incision site preference?

When placing a breast implant, there are three common incision sites: around the nipple (periareolar), within the breast fold (inframammary) and underneath the arm (axillary). MemoryShape Implants may be placed using any of these incision sites. However, the most common incision site is within the breast fold. Shaped implants may require a larger incision than round implants.

What is gel cohesiveness and why is it important?

Gel cohesiveness is determined by the amount of cross-linking within the silicone gel filler. The more cross-linking, the more cohesive the gel and the more it helps to maintain its shape. As such, highly cohesive silicone gel filled breast implants are able to retain their molded, teardrop shape whereas MemoryGel® Implants (round) are more pliable.

Your waist is as wide as or wider than your hips

Whether you call it a beer belly, love handles, or a spare tire, carrying fat around the middle of your body is not a good thing. In fact, one study found that people who are average weight but have excess belly fat may be at higher risk of dying from heart disease than those who are officially obese. The culprit is the layer of fat, called the omentum, that’s inside the belly and is located dangerously close to important organs. Also called visceral or intra-abdominal fat, omental fat can travel quickly to your liver or through the bloodstream to lodge along the artery walls.

Abdominal fat is a tip-off to metabolic syndrome and has been linked with heart disease, artery disease, and diabetes. Doctors define metabolic syndrome as having three out of these four signs: obesity, with fat concentrated around your waist; high blood pressure; high cholesterol; and high blood sugar. For an official diagnosis of metabolic syndrome, doctors define obesity as having a waist circumference of 40 inches or more for men and 35 inches or more for women, although waist circumference cutoff points can vary by race. Once you have metabolic syndrome, you’re likely to become prediabetic or insulin resistant, which is why your doctor will order regular diabetes testing and suggest lifestyle changes to reduce your risk.

Surprising clue: Your belt won’t stay up, or it makes your pants ride high over your belly or low under an overhanging gut. When your waist is larger than what’s above and below it, things tend to slip.

Honey

Honey as a facial treatment may help skin retain moisture. It also heals dry or chapped skin and can give you firmer, smoother skin.

How to make it: Warm a small pot of honey in a double boiler over low heat. After testing a small dab on the inside of your elbow for a safe temperature, apply the honey generously over your entire face. Leave the mask on for 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm, then cool water.

ANTI-AGING FOODS: Fish
A popular dietary supplement in recent years has been fish oil, and there’s certainly good reason for that trend. Eating fish, or taking fish oil supplements, provides the body with omega-3 fatty acids that help protect against heart disease, reduce inflammation, decrease the risk of arrhythmia and lower blood pressure. Omega-3 fatty acids are found largely in coldwater fish, including salmon, herring, tuna and sardines.

Studies have even shown that people who eat a lot of fish live longer. One study of middle-aged American men found that those who ate fish two to three times per week had a 40 percent lower mortality rate than those who did not. In men who had previously suffered a heart attack, eating fish twice a week actually lowered their mortality rates by 29 percent.

Fish is also a great source of protein and, unlike other meats, is low in saturated fat. The American Heart Association recommends eating omega-3-rich fish at least two times per week.

 Super Foods: Beans

Because beans have so many health benefits, they’re sometimes called a “super food” — an informal term for foods that benefit the body in many different ways. Super foods help you meet several of your dietary needs and are great sources of essential vitamins and minerals. Many also help fight disease and sickness, making them powerful anti-aging tools. Other super foods you might want to get your hands on include blueberries, yogurt, eggs, nuts, broccoli and sweet potatoes.

MORE ON ANTI-AGING:

Beans, beans, they’re good for your heart, the more you eat the more you, well, you get the idea. Beans often get a bad reputation because they can make you gassy, but they’re truly one of the great dietary staples. They’re an excellent source of low-fat protein, especially for those who don’t eat meat. They also contain fiber (which can help lower cholesterol), are rich in antioxidants, and are chock full of all sorts of vitamins and minerals, including iron, vitamin B and potassium.

What’s more, some beans — including soy and kidney beans — contain protease inhibitors and genistein, which are thought to help protect against cancer. Studies have shown, for instance, that people who had high levels of genistein had the lowest rates of breast and prostate cancers .

With a slew of anti-aging ingredients claiming to be the Holy Grail of eternal youth, choosing skincare products is overwhelming. But you can shop smart, if you do your research. We’ve done the work for you and broken down the key players in this handy cheat sheet. Here is a break down what they do and how these products may help you stay looking young.

Anti Aging Ingredients

Retinol
Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A, making it a milder version of retinoids (a prescription-only wrinkle fighter). While it takes several weeks to see results, retinol is the most effective over-the-counter anti-aging ingredient when it comes to “smoothing wrinkles, unclogging pores, lightening superficial brown spots, and improving the texture of the skin. Because of retinol’s potency, skin irritation is common, especially in direct sunlight. Apply retinol-based products at night on dry skin to avoid sensitivity and be sure to apply a moisturizer with SPF every morning.

Niacinamide
If you have dark spots resulting from acne scars, sun damage, or old age, lighten them with niacinamade, a vitamin-B3 derivative that prevents melanin, or pigmentation, from rising to the surface. It may help to improve the skin’s moisture barrier and collagen production, all of which reverses the appearance of sun damage. Plus, it’s known to reduce inflammation, and even acne.

Hyaluronic Acid
Though you probably associate the word “acid” with harsh and abrasive, hyaluronic acid is the exact opposite. It’s a humectant, meaning that it draws out water from the air and dermis (the skin that lies below the surface). Look for a lotion that contains hyaluronic acid which can add to the moisturizer’s hydrating qualities, and may even spur new collagen production.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids
Unlike hyaluronic acid, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs for short) are exfoliators that gently dissolve the “glue” that holds surface skin cells together, letting the dead ones slough away to reveal youthful looking skin. This process encourages cell turnover, which typically slows with age. Getting rid of dead skin also lets moisturizers, serums, and skin treatments penetrate the skin and work more effectively. But look for products with no more than 8 percent AHAs. In high concentrations, AHAs can help fade brown spots and fine wrinkles, but they make skin extra sensitive to the sun.

L-ascorbic acid
L-ascorbic acid is just a fancy word for “vitamin C.” Though vitamin C is a good-for-you ingredient that helps boost the immune system, it’s a little more complex when skincare is involved. Think of vitamin C as a wild card — extremely volatile and unstable. “When exposed to air, it undergoes oxidation and becomes ineffective. When vitamin C is stable and good, it’s really good. It’s an important antioxidant that helps build collagen, reduce inflammation, and promote elasticity to plump up skin. But how can you tell if vitamin C in a product is stable? Look for “L-ascorbic acid” in the ingredient list.

Avobenzone
If there’s one skincare product to swear by, it’s a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Avobenzone is a common chemical ingredient in sunscreen that blocks UVA rays. It’s often paired with benzophenone-3 or oxybenzone to shield against UVB rays. For maximum protection, apply a chemical sunscreen directly on skin before serum, lotion, or makeup. Hate the thought of chemicals? Go for a mineral block that contains titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. But because of its chalky texture and shield-like barrier, a mineral block should be applied last, after serum and moisturizer.

Antioxidants
Slow down the clock with an antioxidant-packed skin saver. Antioxidants help prevent and repair damage to your body tissue by encouraging cell growth. More importantly, they neutralize free radicals (unstable, damaging molecules in your body caused by elements such as sunlight, smoke, and pollution). The most popular antioxidants include vitamins C and E, pomegranate, green tea, and coffeeberry extracts.
