Brachioplasty (Arm Lift) Surgery

Brachioplasty (Arm Lift) Surgery Procedure StepsBrachioplasty or arm lift plastic surgery is meant for enhancing the contours of the upper arms and tightening sagging muscles and skin. During the pre-operative consultation, the cosmetic surgeon will inform you about the various steps involved in the treatment. They will clarify doubts and answer questions related to the arm lift surgery as well. Brachioplasty generally takes about 1 – 2 hours to complete. The procedure steps may vary depending on the type of technique the surgeon uses. Vinings Surgery Center, led by board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Colgrove, provides brachioplasty (arm lift) surgery to patients in Atlanta, Marietta, Georgia, and surrounding communities.

Sedation or Anesthesia

The initial step once the patient is ready to be operated on is to administer sedation or anesthesia. Generally, surgeons choose local anesthesia or general anesthesia with intravenous sedation. This depends on the unique circumstances surrounding each case. A registered nurse anesthetist or an anesthesiologist will administer the anesthesia and oversee the entire procedure. They will monitor your reactions as well. Intravenous sedation induces ‘twilight sleep’. In this case, you would be awake technically without being properly conscious of the procedure. You would not be able to recall anything following the surgery.

Placement of Incisions

The surgeon will create markings on the elbows, arms and armpits once you are under the effects of the anesthesia or sedative. This will be done as per the pre-determined surgical plan. The extent of procedure and the type of arm lift technique used will determine the direction, length, and location of the incision lines. The goal of the surgeon will be to place the incisions discreetly and to ensure that any future scarring remains minimally visible. The incisions, in some cases, may be entirely hidden in the armpits or run down the insides of the arm.

Skin Tightening and Fat Reduction

Liposuction may be performed along with the arm lift plastic surgery procedure if you have unwanted stubborn fatty deposits in the upper arm region. Tumescent technique is usually used for suctioning out undesirable fat. Excess skin will be trimmed away before suturing the incisions for tauter and smoother arm contour.

Wound Closure

The surgeon will close the incisions carefully following the arm lift plastic surgery to minimize scarring. Sutures may be placed under the skin where they would get absorbed by the body. The surgeon will place a compression garment after applying sterile dressing. They may place temporary drain tubes at the incision site for a few days. You may be moved to an observation area for a few hours after the procedure. Most patients go back home the same day.

Discuss Openly and Honestly

You should not hesitate to discuss your complete medical history with the surgeon. You should be honest about drug use, smoking, medications, and supplements. You should also make it a point to follow all preparatory and post-surgical instructions. Proper diet and rest will reduce the risk of infection, scarring and other complications.
