Bare your legs with sclerotherapy

Tag Archives: vinings surgery center

It’s the season for skirts, shorts and swimsuits, but if you have spider veins, you may be reluctant to bare your legs this summer. Sclerotherapy, now offered at Vinings Surgery Center, is a safe, effective and virtually painless way to eliminate this annoying (though not at all uncommon) cosmetic issue. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, at least half of all women develop small clusters of red, blue or purple veins that appear on the thighs, calves and ankles.

In some women, spider veins become noticeable in their early 20s. For others, the veins may not become obvious until they reach their 40s. Men get spider veins, too. However, usually they are concealed by hair growth on the leg.

A number of factors may contribute to the development of spider veins in the legs, including:

• Heredity

• Pregnancy

• Hormonal shifts

• Weight gain

• Occupations or activities that require prolonged sitting or standing, such as running, professional nursing, etc.

Sclerotherapy is the injection of a solution into each affected vein, causing it to collapse and fade. It can be performed on people of any age and is a good option for you if:

• You are bothered by spider veins anywhere on your body.

• You have a positive outlook and realistic goals for your spider vein treatment.

• You are committed to following your plastic surgeon’s prescribed course of treatment.

Nurse injector Carmen Wagner administers sclerotherapy at Vinings Surgery Center. She has been with the center for six years, and also administers fillers and Botox treatment. According to Wagner, sclerotherapy can be a more effective and longer-lasting vein solution than laser treatments, since it gets to the source of the spider veins and eradicates them completely. Wagner says she loves working with patients to provide sclerotherapy because “it makes such a big difference in their lives and how they see themselves.”

Sclerotherapy requires no anesthesia and is usually performed in an outpatient setting. Two or more sessions, each lasting about 20 to 30 minutes, Wagner says, are usually required to obtain optimal results. Although everyone is different, you can generally expect to receive one injection for every inch of spider vein that is treated. Bright light and magnification may be used to ensure maximum precision while the skin is held taut to inject sclerosing solution. A cotton ball and compression tape is often applied to each injection site as it is finished.

After treatment, you may be instructed to wear support hose to help your legs heal. You may feel some cramping in your legs for the first day or two after treatment. This discomfort is temporary and usually doesn’t require prescription medication. You will be given specific instructions that may include: How to care for your legs following treatment, medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the risk of infection, and when to return for a follow-up appointment.

Two of the best anti-aging treatments are now available for less money and less time. You’re invited to take advantage of the Duet Dividends program by purchasing a BOTOX® Cosmetic and JUVÉDERM® XC treatment at Vinings Surgery Center. This summer until August 31, 2012, Allergan is offering a $75 rebate when a BOTOX® Cosmetic and JUVÉDERM® XC treatment are administered at the same office visit.

For frown lines and crow’s feet, a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment will block impulses from the nerve to the tiny facial muscles that are related to expression lines. The BOTOX® Cosmetic injection relaxes the muscles so they don’t contract. After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected.

JUVÉDERM® XC dermal filler is a nonsurgical, physician-administered treatment for nasolabial folds and other facial wrinkles. Using a fine needle, it is eased under the skin to fill the soft tissue of the dermis. This adds volume and diminishes the appearance of wrinkles and folds instantly.

Limited number of rebates available. Call (770) 955-9000 to make an appointment today!

Vinings Surgery Center will host a skin care rejuvenation seminar on Wednesday, June 27, from noon to 2 p.m. focusing on laser treatments, BOTOX® and JUVÉDERM®. The seminar will feature a live patient demonstration.

Seminar participants will receive two $50 gift certificates, with one good towards any laser treatment, and one to be applied towards either BOTOX® or JUVÉDERM® (gift certificates will be valid for six months).

Refreshments will be served.

Spotlight on: Stephanie Graiser, RN (soon-to-be Stephanie Bauman, RN)

Role at Vinings Surgery Center: Mondays, I assist Dr. Colgrove in clinic day for all rechecks. Wednesdays, I perform pre-ops or work with the new patients in their consult. I spend Thursdays and Fridays in surgery. I enjoy being with the patient from the beginning during the consult all the way through to the surgery and then onto the recovery phase!

Joined the staff in: 2010, after being a patient in 2008.

What she loves most about what she does: After working on a neurology unit for 3 years, I love working at VSC because everyone is happy, healthy and wants to be there. I also really enjoy developing relationships with the patients and helping them feel comfortable while going through a life-enhancing process.

What she hopes patients gain: My hope for patients is for their embarrassing or bothersome areas to be transformed into confidence boosters. Patients often come in feeling nervous or self-conscious. By the time they are done healing after surgery, you can see they walk with their head a little higher and have a pep in their step!

Her biggest piece of advice: My biggest piece of advice for the patients is to bring your caregiver/spouse/friend to the consult and pre-op. It is very important for the caregiver to understand what the surgical and recovery process is to better know what to expect. Patients heal much better when they are thoroughly cared for and not made to feel guilty for going through with the surgery. Everyone needs a positive support system.

Favorite things to do for fun: I stay very active with working out, running, playing softball, tennis and flag football or just being outside. I enjoy going to church and participating in a small group. I love to spend time with my fiance, family and friends. I also stay very busy planning to marry my best friend this summer!

Come meet Stephanie in person! For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 770-955-9000 or email vsc@colgrove.com.

He and the staff will answer questions and address concerns, while providing you with all the information you need to make your decision about breast augmentation.

Spring has officially sprung! That means it’s time to spring into action to get ready for the summer’s beach and poolside fun. Here are a few things to consider as you work on getting ready to bare it all (almost) this summer:

Fitness

Whether it’s Pilates, running, yoga, walking, or a little bit of everything, find whatever works for you and get into it! Here are some ideas from Fitness magazine for getting that body healthy and bikini-ready. Be sure not to overdo it or make any drastic changes without consulting your doctor first. And most of all, have fun!

Skin care

The harsh conditions of winter can leave us with layers of dull, dry skin that is definitely in need of a little TLC. Freshen your skin care routine, switching to a lighter moisturizer for the warmer weather. Make sure to gently exfoliate to slough off dead skin cells and uncover healthier cells. Laser skin resurfacing, offered at Vinings Surgery Center, gently and precisely removes microscopic layers of skin, tightening sagging skin and stimulating new collagen growth.

Laser hair removal

Who wants to spend time shaving to get ready to put on that swimwear? Laser hair removal, also available at Vinings Surgery Center, is an effective and efficient means of long-term hair removal. A highly concentrated beam of light vaporizes troublesome hair follicles to eliminate or significantly impede the hair’s regrowth.

Male Breast Reduction

For men who feel self-conscious about their appearance when shirtless, breast-reduction surgery can help. The procedure, performed by Dr. Colgrove, removes fat and or glandular tissue from the breasts, and in extreme cases removes excess skin, resulting in a chest that is flatter, firmer and better contoured.

For help with any other “problem areas” you may be concerned about, there are other helpful procedures available.

Enjoy this time of renewal and refreshing, and have fun getting ready for summer!

Yesterday’s free lunch-and-learn seminar focusing on breast augmentation gave attendees the valuable opportunity to ask Dr. Colgrove and his staff questions about the most popular procedure at Vinings Surgery Center.

During the seminar, Dr. Colgrove offered in-depth information about breast augmentation and specific types of implants. He explained the differences between silicone and saline implants, as well as the pros and cons of each type. Dr. Colgrove also spoke to participants about what to expect in the recovery and healing process following the surgery, emphasizing the importance of stretching, massage, and the use of high-quality support bras in the weeks after the procedure is done. He introduced the group to his nursing staff, which is always on hand to answer questions, address concerns and walk patients through the entire process.

Curt Trogdon of Allergan, maker of the Natrelle® silicone implant, was on hand to give attendees in-depth information about the implants. Attendees were reminded that, for a limited time, patients who select Natrelle® implants receive a free Botox® treatment or Latisse® for themselves and a friend.

Dr. Colgrove also gave personal consultations and evaluations to each attendee, giving each woman all the information she would need to help her in making a decision about breast augmentation.

Check back often for more information on upcoming seminars. We’d love to hear from you about seminar topics you’d like to see. Let us know!
